Fuel Movement Community Center: Giving Back To North Lawndale

TV Interview

Fuel Movement Community Center was recently featured on WGN for its growing impact in the North Lawndale community. The story highlighted the center’s commitment to addressing food insecurity, offering essential resources, and creating a safe, supportive space for families and individuals in need.

During the interview, hosts spoke with Darrell and Mayo Glover, who shared how Fuel Movement began as a small storefront effort and has grown into a multifaceted community hub. The center not only operates a food pantry, but also provides weekly meals, community services, and resource connections for residents facing hardship.

Darrell explained the importance of meeting the needs of a neighborhood deeply affected by limited access to food and supportive services. “We wanted to bring life back into our community,” he shared. “There’s a great need in North Lawndale, and we want people to know they have a warm, welcoming place they can come to.”

The segment also noted Fuel Movement’s strong community response, with residents expressing gratitude for both the food pantry and the sense of belonging it provides. Many visitors said they feel “at home” when they walk through the doors, regardless of background or circumstance.

The interview highlighted several of Fuel Movement’s initiatives, including:

  • Weekly community meals
  • A fully operating food pantry
  • Warm Up Wednesday, providing coats, socks, and winter essentials
  • Clean Cermak, a volunteer-driven neighborhood cleanup effort
  • Christmas on Cermak, supporting families who cannot afford gifts
  • Open access to household items, coats, and other donations

Darrell and Mayo emphasized that everyone is welcome, with no income requirements or barriers. Their mission remains clear:

Encourage families, support the community, and create opportunities throughout North Lawndale.

As Fuel Movement continues to grow, the Glovers shared that they are expanding support across Chicago, strengthening partnerships, and preparing for even more neighborhood outreach.
