The Heart Behind Our Mission

North Lawndale deserves better than broken promises. That's why we're here.

Growing up in North Lawndale, Executive Director Darrell Glover watched his mother welcome every neighbor who needed help. She taught him that real community means showing up for each other, especially when times get tough.

As a pastor serving this community, Darrell faced a painful reality. Years of broken promises had left his neighbors feeling hopeless and forgotten. Young people couldn't see a future for themselves. Families were struggling just to get by.

Darrell realized North Lawndale didn't need another program that would disappear after a few years. Our community needed something deeper.

We needed someone willing to rebuild trust one relationship at a time, no matter how long it took. That's when Darrell asked himself the question that changed everything: if not me, who?

Building Something Different

For twelve years, we've been creating the kind of community center North Lawndale deserves. A place where neighbors become family. Where challenges become opportunities. Where residents lead their own transformation.

We don't just provide services—we build relationships that last.

Most organizations focus on one problem at a time. We knew that wouldn't work. Real families don't have single problems. They have connected challenges that need connected solutions.

That's why we built six program areas that work together: Health & Wellness, Education, Nutrition & Meals, Family Support, Workforce Development, and Community Advocacy.

When a family comes to us for help with food, we can also connect them to job training, healthcare, and educational support. When a teenager joins our programs, they get tutoring, mentoring, and leadership opportunities.

The Impact We're Making

Every year, we serve over 1,000 families. But our real impact shows up in the moments that matter:

  • Families finding new friendships at community meals
  • Teenagers discovering their voices through leadership programs
  • Neighbors helping neighbors because they've learned what community support can accomplish
  • Children seeing new possibilities when their parents find stable jobs

This is how transformation spreads—one relationship at a time, one family at a time, one block at a time.

North Lawndale is experiencing a resident-led revitalization that focuses on hope, collaboration, and community ownership. This change isn't being imposed from outside. It's growing from within, led by people who call this place home.

We're building the North Lawndale that's always been possible—where everyone has what they need to thrive.

This transformation isn't being imposed from outside—it's growing from within, led by people who call this place home.

Who We Serve

North Lawndale families represent the diversity and strength of urban America. Our community includes:

  • Working families struggling to balance multiple jobs with raising children
  • Young people with big dreams who need support and opportunities to achieve them
  • Seniors with decades of wisdom who want to remain active in community life
  • Single parents managing household responsibilities while pursuing education or career goals
  • Recent immigrants building new lives while maintaining cultural connections
  • Longtime residents who've watched the neighborhood change and want to lead its renewal

These families bring incredible assets to our community while facing real challenges that comprehensive support can help address.

Current Challenges

Decades of disinvestment and systemic barriers have created interconnected challenges that require coordinated solutions:

Health & Wellness

  • Limited access to quality healthcare providers and preventive services
  • High rates of diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic conditions
  • Mental health resources inadequate for community trauma and stress
  • Food deserts that make healthy eating difficult and expensive

Education

  • Underfunded schools that struggle to provide comprehensive programming
  • Limited after-school and summer opportunities for young people
  • Adult education programs insufficient for workforce preparation needs
  • College preparation support lacking for families navigating higher education

Economic Opportunity

  • High unemployment and underemployment rates
  • Limited access to job training for growing industries
  • Few local businesses providing goods, services, and employment
  • Financial services scarce, creating barriers to building wealth

Housing & Safety

  • Housing stock needing rehabilitation and maintenance
  • Violence affecting community members' sense of security
  • Limited youth programming creating supervision gaps
  • Community spaces insufficient for positive social interaction

Community Assets

North Lawndale's greatest strength lies in its people:

  • Deep family networks that support each other through challenges
  • Cultural richness from diverse backgrounds and traditions
  • Historic legacy of civil rights leadership and community organizing
  • Beautiful architecture and neighborhood character worth preserving
  • Strategic location with access to downtown Chicago and transportation
  • Community institutions including churches, schools, and resident organizations

These assets form the foundation for comprehensive community development that builds on existing strengths.

Our Vision for North Lawndale

We envision a North Lawndale where:

  • Every family has access to quality healthcare, education, and economic opportunity
  • Young people see clear pathways to success and leadership in their own community
  • Neighbors support each other through both challenges and celebrations
  • Local businesses provide goods, services, and employment that keep wealth in the neighborhood
  • Community members lead their own development efforts with appropriate support and resources

This vision guides our comprehensive programming that addresses health, education, nutrition, family support, workforce development, and community advocacy simultaneously.

Why Comprehensive Support Works

Traditional approaches that focus on single issues miss how everything connects in families' real lives. A parent struggling with food insecurity might also need job training, healthcare access, and educational support for their children.

Our holistic model recognizes these connections and provides coordinated support that addresses multiple challenges at once.

When we help one family member find stable employment, their children see new possibilities. When we support a teenager's education, they often become mentors for younger kids. When we advocate for better community resources, everyone benefits.

This approach creates ripple effects that spread throughout North Lawndale, building the foundation for long-term transformation.
